FORECAST DISCUSSION: Friday, June 30: *** Epidemic Update - 30 June: There is another source of blue mold in the southern Appalachian Mountains *** Blue mold is present in research plots at the Mountain Research Station in Waynesville, NC, in Haywood County. There is active sporulation from fresh lesions. This is a fairly strong outbreak and its existence will be incorporated into the forecasts.
28 June: Blue mold has been reported in Pennsylvania *** Bob Anderson informs us that blue mold has been discovered in southeast PA in Lancaster and Chester Counties. These two outbreaks have occurred in the field. Both are small but sporulating strongly. This source area will be added to the forecasts. The southern GA / northern FL region will likely be removed from the detailed forecasts. We will continue to monitor the threat from this region and report any significant events.
*** The weather in the eastern U.S. and southern Ontario will be unfavorable for disease development this weekend. *** With the exception of southern GA and northern FL today ..... cooler, drier air is moving into the growing regions courtesy of a large area of high pressure. Long-range transport and deposition are highly unlikely each day. Isolated showers may occur in some areas during the weekend, but most areas will remain dry. Any disease development will remain localized. Low Risk for all growers this weekend.
*** Detailed forecasts are unavailable for today. We apologize for any inconvenience from this or our late posting. Minor flooding in your forecaster's office and preparations for an extended overseas field experiment have forced these restraints upon us. ***

We do not have the capability to ascertain blue mold development by other means, such as transplanting of infected seedlings, nor will we attempt to do so.
