28 June 2000 Blue Mold Forecasts

 

FORECAST DISCUSSION: Wednesday, June 28: *** Epidemic Update - Blue mold has been reported in Pennsylvania *** Bob Anderson informs us that blue mold has been discovered in southeast PA in Lancaster and Chester Counties. These two outbreaks have occurred in the field. Both are small but sporulating strongly. This source area will be added to the forecasts. The southern GA / northern FL region will likely be removed from the detailed forecasts. We will continue to monitor the threat from this region and report any significant events. *** Monday, June 26. Blue mold has been reported in southern New England *** Jim LaMondia informs us that a few lesions were found on tobacco plants in a greenhouse at the University of MA in Amherst, on June 23. Infected plants were destroyed and others were treated with Acrobat. Growers in the Connecticut River Valley region should be alert to the possibility of infections.

*** The weather in the eastern U.S. will be favorable for disease development Wednesday and Thursday. *** A nearly stationary front is positioned over the mid-Atlantic and TN Valley regions. Clouds, showers, and thunderstorms will visit many areas until the front is pushed to the south and east on Thursday. Growers in the southern Appalachian Mountains, central and eastern NC, southeast VA, and southern MD are at HIGH RISK of disease development Wednesday and Thursday. There is Strongly Moderate Risk for eastern KY, southeast PA, and southern VA. Farther north.... growers in southern Ontario and southern New England face Low Risk today. Conditions will become favorable on Thursday for both areas, however. Strongly Moderate Risk for southern Ontario and southern New England on Thursday. In the extended outlook, good news is on the horizon: dry, unfavorable weather will dominate over most growing areas this weekend, with cooler temperatures and lower humidities.
