FORECAST DISCUSSION: Friday, July 7: *** Epidemic Update: We have new reports of blue mold from the southern Appalachian Mountains and south-central VA. *** Extension Agent Stanley Holloway has confirmed blue mold in Yancey County, NC. This serious outbreak is in a 4-acre field. At least 1/4 of the field is infected with heavy sporulation present. Chuck Johnson in Virginia reports that blue mold has been found in Lee, Mecklenburg, and Pittsylvania counties. Disease activity varies among these sources of questionable strength.
*** No long-range transport is expected this weekend. *** The frontal system that affected the growing areas earlier this week is almost out of the picture. There is some lingering unsettled weather in the Carolinas and New England today. Otherwise, two high pressure areas.... one moving southeast from Canada, the other situated off the Atlantic coast.... will govern the weather. Conditions will be unfavorable for long-range transport, but localized disease development is possible for some regions. Growers in the southern Appalachian Mountains will be at Moderate Risk each day. Growers in southern Ontario will be at Low Risk today, Moderate Risk Saturday, and Strongly Moderate Risk Sunday. Elsewhere, except for the Moderate Risk events for southern New England and NC on Friday, growers in the Ohio Valley region and the Eastern Seaboard states will be at Low Risk this weekend.

We do not have the capability to ascertain blue mold development by other means, such as transplanting of infected seedlings, nor will we attempt to do so.
