21 July 2000 Blue Mold Forecasts

 

FORECAST DISCUSSION: Friday, July 21: *** Epidemic Update 19 July: First report of blue mold from Connecticut *** Jim LaMondia in CT reports that blue mold has been discovered in shade tobacco in the northern part of Tolland County, CT, near the Massachusetts border. There are a small number of old and new lesions, some of which are currently sporulating.

*** The weather will be favorable for disease development in southern New England and the lower mid-Atlantic region each day this weekend. *** One front is stationary in the Southeast; another front is moving toward the eastern Seaboard Friday and Saturday. The two will combine to produce favorable conditions for many areas this weekend. In southern New England... growers are at Moderate Risk Friday and Sunday, HIGH RISK on Saturday. In the southern mid-Atlantic region, growers in central and eastern NC are at HIGH RISK today, Strongly Moderate Risk Saturday and Sunday. South-central VA is at Strongly Moderate Risk each day. In addition, northeast SC will be at Strongly Moderate Risk on Sunday. Growers in southern Ontario and southeast PA are at Moderate Risk Friday and Saturday, Low Risk Sunday. The southern Appalachian Mountains are at Low Risk today, Moderate Risk Saturday and Sunday. Ohio Valley growers will be at Low Risk this weekend, but some localized disease development is possible due to moisture provided by nighttime showers.
