19 July 2000 Blue Mold Forecasts

 

FORECAST DISCUSSION: Wednesday, July 19: *** Epidemic Update: First report of blue mold from Connecticut *** Jim LaMondia in CT reports that blue mold has been discovered in shade tobacco in the northern part of Tolland County, CT, near the Massachusetts border. There are a small number of old and new lesions, some of which are currently sporulating.

*** Unsettled weather will affect many growing regions today. Dry, unfavorable weather will dominate on Thursday. *** An active cold front is moving southward into the mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley regions today. The Carolinas will start out sunny but clouds are prevalent elsewhere. Rain, showers, or thunderstorms will impact areas from KY and TN eastward into the Carolinas and northward to New England. As the front pushes south, conditions will become much less favorable for disease development. In southern New England.... there is HIGH RISK for growers in CT today, Moderate Risk for other growers. Moderate Risk for CT on Thursday, with Low Risk otherwise. Southern Ontario will be at Low Risk Wednesday and Thursday. In the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic states..... there is HIGH RISK for growers in the Ohio Valley, southern Appalachian Mountains, Maryland, and southeast PA on Wednesday. Localized disease development is possible in NC and VA but growers there are at Low Risk otherwise. All of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic regions will be at Low Risk on Thursday. The next frontal system will affect the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes on Friday.
