17 July 2000 Blue Mold Forecasts

FORECAST DISCUSSION: Monday, July 17: *** Epidemic Update: First report of blue mold from Maryland *** Blue mold was discovered this past Thursday, July 12, in St. Mary's County in southern Maryland. Fresh lesions are scattered throughout a 20-acre field but with only a few lesions per plant. Active sporulation is occurring. Chuck Johnson in Virginia informs us that blue mold continues to spread in the south-central portion of that state.

*** After a break for most areas, favorable weather will return to the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic states. *** Yet another strong cold front will push south and east from the Great Lakes Monday and Tuesday. Unsettled weather will move into the Ohio Valley and the southern Appalachian Mountains on Tuesday. Areas east of the mountains will have mostly unfavorable weather through the period. No long-range transport is expected from any of the source regions. Southern New England will have showery weather both days, with Strongly Moderate Risk to growers in that area. Southern Ontario and southeast PA may have some localized disease development, since showers are possible overnight in these areas. In the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic states, all growers are at Low Risk on Monday. Growers in KY, southern OH, and western WV will be at Strongly Moderate Risk on Tuesday. Growers in the southern Appalachian Mountains will be at Moderate Risk on Tuesday. Growers east of the mountains will remain at Low Risk on Tuesday. In the extended period..... this front is going to stall out over the mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley regions for several days, starting on Wednesday. Disease-favorable weather will likely persist in these areas from Wednesday through Friday.
