FORECAST DISCUSSION: Wednesday, August 2: *** All sources are Serious Threats Wednesday and Thursday *** A tropical environment will continue to dominate the weather picture for the eastern United States. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy and there will be a chance of scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms each day. A cold front moving into the Northeast and Ohio Valley on Thursday may usher in some less favorable weather in the northern and western areas during the weekend. On Wednesday... there is HIGH RISK for southern Ontario and the southern Appalachian Mountains. There is Strongly Moderate Risk for central and eastern sections of NC and VA, MD, and the Ohio Valley. Growers in southern PA and southern New England are at Moderate Risk. On Thursday.... nearly all growers will be at Strongly Moderate Risk. The lone exception is southern Ontario, where Low Risk conditions will be found in the wake of the passing cold front.
*** 2 August Disease Update: Bill Nesmith in Kentucky reports a major epidemic of blue mold occurring in eastern KY, southern OH, and western WV. Weather this past weekend was near ideal for foliar blue mold development, and most growers are not attempting to control the disease. Chuck Johnson in Virginia reports that active blue mold has been reported in Patrick and Dinwiddie counties.
