Participants in the show are evaluated on the overall weight of their turkeys, the muscling in the breast and legs, and how well each participant has taken care of their bird. The preparation for this event begins in early June, when individuals pick up day old turkey poults from NCSU's poultry teaching facility. The youth are then responsible for feeding and caring for their birds until the NC State Fair, where all of their hard work will be put to the test. From just a couple of ounces of peeping fuzz that fit in your palm, to an average of 35lbs for toms and 20 lbs average for hens that now require both hands to hold, youth learn how to raise turkeys and literally “grow” with their projects.    A special thank you to Prestage Farms for donating the hen poults this year and to all those in the Department of Poultry Science at NC State University that helped make this event possible.
