To: Agents with 4-H Responsibilities and County Directors
In preparation for 4-H District Activity Days, please try to make sure the 4-H'ers from your county are entered in the correct 4-H Horticultural Presentation Program. The following presentation information should aid you in assigning your 4-H'ers:
Age eligibility is established on January 1st of the current year. To participate in Presentation competition, the 4-H member must be nine years of age prior to January 1st of the current year and not have had his/her 19th birthday before January 1st of the current year. Divisions are 9-10, 11-13, and 14-18.
At the NJHA Convention, a demonstration must be given by senior participants.
Artistic Arrangement -- The use of flowers and other horticultural crops in arrangements, corsages and plaques. Materials used may be live or dried. Weeds and native materials may be used. Artificial plants, flowers and silks are not allowed. No teams allowed!
!!!!!Please Note: Horticultural Production and Horticultural Marketing are combined (See North Carolina 4-H Awards Handbook). The award is $75.00 toward expenses to the NJHA Convention to top winner in Horticultural Production and top winner in Horticultural Marketing. There is only one contest but the top winner in Production and top winner in Marketing (regardless of where the second one places) will receive the $75.00 to the NJHA contest.
Horticultural Production -- Any practice that has to do with growing vegetables, fruits, nuts, flowers, ornamental plants and turf, as well as those practices concerned with maintaining, replenishing, or increasing the production capacity of the soil. Terrarium construction , dish garden presentations as well as composting and vermicompostion should be entered in this program.
Horticultural Marketing -- Operations in preparing vegetables, edible tree nuts, fruits, flowers, and ornamental plants for market, offering for sale to a buyer, or for storage and in preparing for and exhibiting these horticultural crops.
Landscaping -- Any practice that has to do with arrangement, establishment and maintenance of flowers, ornamental plants and turf around or within the home, business or public grounds. Presentations on growing landscaping materials should be entered in production division.
