Expected Production

In comparing production figures, it is important to note the length of the production season, plant density, and the number of crops/year. In general, yields are much higher than for outdoor production: 375 MT ha-1year-1 compared to 100 MT ha-1year-1[9]. Maximum greenhouse yields are estimated at 500 MT/ha/year. Yields are increasing worldwide because of better cultivars and more intensive use of technology. Tomato production in Dutch greenhouses increased from 250 MT ha-1 in 1985 to 400 MT ha-1 in 1994 [10]. For an individual plant in a high light environment, 18 kg over a 7-8 month cropping period represents an excellent yield [11]. In the southeastern US however, yields of 9-10 kg plant-1 are more common.
