Our Mission | History of Cooperative Extension

We are part of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service -- housed at NC State University in the Department of Horticultural Science. Our staff consists of a horticultural specialist (currently vacant) and a state Master Gardener coordinator. We network with other departmental extension specialists in the development of new educational resources. All of our materials are peer reviewed.

Our primary goal is to develop education materials for the horticultural agents and Master Gardener Volunteers in our 100 county Extension centers. Our outreach to the gardening public is through this web site. This web site includes materials we developed and provide links to other departments at NC State (soil science, plant pathology, entomology, forestry and wildlife). Hort on the Internet included over 3,000 links to NC State resources and other land grant universities around the country.

One of the highlights of this web site can be found under Plant Factsheet. It contains cultural information on growing many plants and a series of facts sheets on specific plant species and cultivars.
