Flower/fruit: Compact 1 to 2 inch spike of small rose-pink flowers  
Flowering Season: Summer into fall
Foliage: 4 to 6 inch alternate, shiny lanceolate leaves; sheaths without fringes; reddish joints; some plants have small, wicked barbs on slender stems; thickened at nodes
Site: Moist fields, roadsides, waste places
