Flower/fruit: Violet-lavender to rosy purple flowers on tall spike; bowl-shaped flowerheads up to 1 inch across contain 25 to 60 flowers; blooms from the top downward
Flowering Season: Mid-summer to late fall
Foliage: Basal leaves vary from lance-shaped to slender top-shaped; .5 to 2 inches wide; hairy and often roughish
Site: Prairies, glades, savannas; prefers: sun, good drainage, moderately fertile soil
