Flower/fruit: Spike of .5 inch rose-purple to violet-lavender, cylindrical, stalkless flower heads crowded on a coarse, hairy, very leafy stem; bracts below heads have long pointed purplish tips
Flowering Season: Summer into fall
Foliage: 4 to 12 inch leaves; upper leaves are smaller and linear
Site: Damp prairies; prefers average, well-drained soil and full sun; tolerates poor soil, drought, heat
