Height: 3 to 4 feet
Flower/fruit: 1 inch flower heads; numerous bright blue rays
Flowering Season: Summer, fall
Foliage: Upright, rigid branches; lower leaves are 3 to 6 inches long, variously toothed, cut on lobes and tapering into long stalks; the upper leaves are smaller and have clasping bases
Site: Tolerates dry, poor soil; sun; fields and roadsides 
Comments: Introduced from Europe; roots can be used to make a coffee substitute
