Coastal Ecology
Quercus virginiana is the Live oak. Live oak is a familiar tree to anyone who has visited the southeastern coast. Along the frontal dunes it assumes a wind-sheared, dwarfed appearance, while inland in the maritime forest it may be one of the broadest spreading, largest trees seen. Many people think that all evergreen oaks of the coast are live oaks, but this is not true. Leaves of Live oak are evergreen, dark green above and lighter green below, flat, and with margins which are thickened but are not rolled under. Note that the acorns of Live oak are borne on a long stalk, and are elongate and football shaped.
