Quercus michauxii is the Swamp chestnut oak, a Facultative Wetland species. Swamp chestnut oak is a large tree found in river bottoms, low areas and along the edges of coastal swamps. Its leaves are simple, alternate and obovate, meaning that they are widest towards the tip. The leaves are 4 to 8 inches long and up to 4 inches wide, and bear uniform, coarse, rounded teeth along the margins. The fruit of the oaks is an acorn, and that of Swamp chestnut oak is large, sweet and relished by deer and other wildlife. The bark is light brown to gray and is scaly.
