Coastal Ecology
Pinus taeda is the Loblolly pine. Loblolly is the American Indian name for a low, wet area; and Loblolly pine is often found growing in low, wet sites. Loblolly pine is the most common pine of the maritime forest, growing far enough back from the ocean to be protected from the intense salt spray. After coastal storms, the needles of Loblolly pine will brown out, only to be replaced later by new green growth. Loblolly pine is the timber tree planted most extensively in coastal areas, and many new homes are built on old timber land, explaining why the pine trees grow in such even rows! Loblolly pine is recognized by its yellow-green needles from 4 to 10 inches long, held in bundles of 2 and 3 on the same tree. Cones are a medium brown and measure from 3 to 6 inches in length.
