Coastal Ecology
Pinus elliottii is the Slash pine, native from South Carolina down through Florida, but planted for conservation purposes on the Outer Banks and widely naturalized there. Slash pine is a beautiful tree, often planted as an ornamental in yards and along streets. It has dark green needles in bundles of 2 and 3 measuring about 7 to 10 inches in length. The seed cones point toward the tips of the branches when young, but as they mature curve backwards and point toward the interior of the tree, and are glossy and cinnamon brown in color.
