A Bay is a name given to trees with a similar outward appearance by the early botanists that explored the coastal plain. Bays are broadleaf evergreens, with simple, elliptical-shaped leaves with entire, not toothed margins, and often bearing foliage which is aromatic when crushed. There are a number of trees which fit this description and all share the common name, Bay. Persea borbonia is the true Redbay. Persea borbonia sensu latu is the name given to all coastal redbays if one chooses not to distinguish between the two species. Persea borbonia grows in the sandy soils along the frontal dunes on the southern barrier islands, seen here wind sheared on Bald Head Island. To distinguish Persea borbonia from Persea palustris, note that on P. borbonia the twigs and leaf undersides are not brownish-hairy, and the hairs present are straight, silky and tightly appressed to the surface.
