Nyssa biflora is the Swamp tupelo, an Obligate Wetland species. Swamp tupelo is a medium sized, deciduous tree found in swamps, pocosins and low savannas of the coastal plain. It has light brown bark broken into squarish blocks. The leaves of Swamp tupelo are simple, alternate and elliptic, with entire or coarsely toothed margins. The flowers which are borne in the spring are inconspicuous, but the mature fruits are more noticeable, being dark blue, fleshy, about 1/2 inch long, and borne singly or in pairs on a long stalk.
