Magnolia grandiflora is the Southern magnolia or Bull bay. Southern magnolia is a large tree used in landscapes in much of the southeast, and native in North Carolina to a small section of Brunswick County near the South Carolina border. A Bay is a name given to trees with a similar outward appearance by the early botanists that explored the coastal plain. Bays are broadleaf evergreens, with simple, elliptical-shaped leaves with entire, not toothed margins, and often bearing foliage which is aromatic when crushed. There are a number of trees which fit this description and all share the common name, Bay. Bull bay is recognized by most coastal residents, familiar with its very large, white fragrant flowers produced through the summer; and by its very large, dark green, glossy leaves which often bear a rusty brown hairiness on the lower surface; and its distinctive, large, fuzzy cone-like fruits opening and liberating scarlet seeds suspended on slender white threads late in the summer.
