Plant Description
Deciduous tree small trees or shrubs; leaves alternate, simple, shape variable with toothed margins; flowers April to May, white; fruit small apple-like, green maturing to red.

White flowers in spring, red fruits eaten by wildlife.

Small specimen tree, shrub border.

Availability/Propagation
Native species are usually not available commercially. Propagate by seed.
Culture
Full sun to partial shade, moist, well drained soils.
Coastal Ecology
Various forms of Crataegus have been documented on the North Carolina coast, but most have been identified only to genus. The Washington hawthorn, Crataegus phaenopyrum is available through nurseries and performs well in coastal landscapes along the sounds and tidal creeks, showing moderate tolerance of salt spray.
