Plant Description
Deciduous shrub - small tree to 15 feet; leaves opposite, elongate to oval, without teeth on the margins; flowers in April and May, white, with 4 strap-like petals; fruit maturing late summer, olive-like black drupes.
Ornamental Characteristics
Excellent in flower, fall color a soft yellow to brownish gold.
Landscape Use
Excellent specimen flowering tree.

Availability/Propagation
Available in nurseries. Plants produced at a local nursery, grown from a coastal source of seed (ecotype) should be used for best adaptability. Propagated by seed.
Culture
Transplant container grown or balled and burlapped plants, grow in full sun in moist soils.
Coastal Ecology
Native from New Jersey to Florida, Fringetree is not recorded growing wild on the barrier islands, but when in bloom during spring, it is widely apparent on the coastal mainland along roadsides and near the shoreline of the sounds. Not tolerant of salt spray. It tolerates wet, swampy soils and dry, sandy sites.
