Plant Description
Deciduous tree to 40 feet; leaves alternate, simple, ovate with doubly toothed margins; inconspicuous flowers and woody, conelike fruits.

Graceful multistemmed form, peeling bark.
Landscape Use
Specimen small tree.
Horticultural Cultivars
The ornamental cultivar 'Heritage' grows well in protected inland coastal areas, but is not tolerant of salt spray nor dry, dunes conditions.
Availability/Propagation
Nursery grown trees widely available.
Culture
Transplant container grown or balled-and burlapped trees into moist, rich soils in full sun to partial shade. Not tolerant of dry, sandy soils nor frontal dunes conditions.
Coastal Ecology
River birch is a Facultative Wetland species. It is a medium to large tree, and its most conspicuous characteristic is its beautiful, peeling grayish to brownish bark.
