Learning by Doing: Experiential Learning

Continue here after Retreat I
Now that you and your team members have
participated in "Retreat I" complete this section
to continue with this module

It is time to put your new skills to work! With your Team or as an individual activity, complete the following activity to create a lesson plan

Application and Expansion Exercise 1:
Designing a learning experience (???)
Now it’s your turn to design a learning experience utilizing the experiential learning model. The worksheet for this exercise will help you achieve this goal.

On the linked print-out sheet, design your learning experience.

First, you need to decide the specific subject you’ll be teaching. Think of a fact or skill that you’d like to teach. Add the topic your worksheet

Next, decide what learning activity will be appropriate and put this in the circle number 1 of the worksheet. You’ll also need to decide which questions will help your learners describe their work. Put these ideas in circle number 2.

Now think of some questions that might be good to ask based on your subject. These questions should help the learners think about the process of doing the activity and describe their observations. Put this information in circle number 3. Next, decide how you’ll help learners relate their experience to other situations. Put this information goes in circlenumber 4.

Finally, think of ways to help learners apply this learning experience. Is there something they can do to practice the skill or to make a plan to use this new skill or knowledge? Design questions to elicit these kinds of responses and put them in circle number 5.

To complete the form, estimate the amount of time you think the learners will need to complete each step.

Save this worksheet in your TRY-IT Personal Leadership Portfolio. You might want to keep a blank copy in your TRY-IT Personal Leadership Portfolio to help in planning future training events with your team.

Record your answers to the following questions in your Reflection Journal. Think about the experiential learning model and the activities you’ve just completed. Describe how you have been involved in learning situations where some of these concepts were used. Why do you enjoy learning by discovery? Do you think it will be easier or more difficult to teach others using the experiential learning model? Why?
