Learning by Doing: Experiential Learning

Prior Life Experiences Exercise:
Memories of Learning

Let’s begin by thinking about situations in which you were a learner. This might have been in school, at a club meeting, or at a friend’s house. Learning at school is usually called formal learning, while learning in other, more relaxed situations is usually called non-formal learning.

As you remember your learning experiences, focus on a single, especially good memory of learning. Take a few minutes to jot down as much as you can remember about that experience. Who was there? What made it a good experience? What were you doing? What did the room or environment look like? Who was the teacher? What was the teacher like? What sensory details can you recall? Record as many specifics as you can remember. You may even want to sketch a picture of the room or setting.

On the linked print-out sheet, record your memories of a pleasant learning experience.

Now, think about a learning experience that was not very good. Record this experience using the previous questions and jot down anything else you remember. Draw a picture if it helps you recall details.

On the linked print-out sheet, record your memories of a unpleasant learning experience.
