| Leadership
Behaviors On The Airwaves |

A
song often becomes popular because its melody and lyrics combine
to “speak to the human condition.” Specifically its
words describe some aspect of our everyday life that has meaning
and purpose for us.
Think about
the definitions of transactional leadership and transformational
leadership that you have explored in this module. Then, while listening
to the radio or your stereo, identify a song whose lyrics you believe
describe someone demonstrating transactional leadership behavior.
Then, identify another song whose lyrics you believe describe someone
demonstrating transformational leadership behavior. |
|
Identify
songs where the lyrics describe individuals transactional
and
transformational
leadership behaviors |
| |
Use
the Internet (or the CD booklet) to locate the exact titles and
lyrics for both songs. Finally, write a few paragraphs explaining
why you selected the songs and how they relate to each specific
leadership behavior. |
|
Conduct
an Internet search for the titles and lyrics of the songs you identified |
|
Write
your paragraphs explaining your selections |
| |
Before
you continue in this module, go to your Reflection
Journal, enter today’s date, and record both the
songs’ titles and applicable lyrics and the paragraphs you have
just completed. |

and Expansion Exercise 2: |
| Meet
the Press |
| |
Think
about the definitions of transactional leadership and transformational
leadership that you have explored in this module.
Now, turn to
the front page of a current newspaper or news magazine (you may
also locate and print news reports on the Internet). Highlight an
article (or print one from the Internet) you believe describes transactional
leadership behavior in a national or international context. Then,
identify an article you believe describes a transformational leadership
behavior in a national or international context. Finally, identify
a third article you believe describes a both transactional and transformational
leadership behaviors in a national or international context. |
|
Highlight
your
front page articles describing transactional
and
transformational
leadership behaviors |
| |
Now,
turn to the local news section or wherever city/town news is reported.
Highlight or print separate articles describing transactional leadership
and transformational leadership in a local context and then a third
describing both transactional and transformational leadership behaviors
in a local context. |
|
Highlight
your
local news articles describing transactional
and
transformational
leadership behaviors |
| |
Now,
for each of the six articles you have identified, write a few paragraphs
explaining why you selected it and how it illustrates the specific
leadership behavior. |
|
Write
your paragraphs explaining your selectioned articles |
| |
Before
you continue in this module, go to your Reflection
Journal, enter today’s date, and record the references
you identified (including the volume number, and date, article title
or other applicable source information) and the paragraphs that you
have just written. |

| Application
and Expansion Exercise 3: |
| Art
Mimics Real Life |
| |
Now
it’s your turn to join leadership theory with art. Using what
you have learned about transactional leadership and transformational
leadership, use some form of artistic expression to convey a leadership
story containing both types of leadership behaviors. First, develop
a story that involves a leader both giving and taking (transactional
leadership) and metamorphosizing (transformational leadership) along
with those around him/her. Next, choose an artistic medium (or form)
through which to convey (or tell) the story. For example, you paint
a picture; write a poem, song, or play; or create a sculpture. |
|
Create
your artistic expression of leadership behaviors |
| |
Go
to your Reflection Journal,
enter today’s date, and record your play, poem, or song about
leadership. Or, if you painted or sculpted your story, take a photo
of your work and insert it into your TRY-IT Personal Leadership Portfolio.
Then describe your visual art and its meaning. |
