North Carolina 4-H Presentation Guidelines:
Health and Fitness

Purpose/Objectives:

For youth to apply research, communication and problem-solving skills toward personal and community health promotion.

Each participant will be able to:

  • Select a health topic and explain why you choose that topic.
  • Research the topic.
  • Identify the cause(s) of the health problem.
  • Illustrate how to prevent the problem.
  • Discuss a program or intervention to prevent or reduce the problem (required for Senior Division youth only.


Eligibility:

Individuals or teams may compete.

  • 9-10 - 4-H'er must be 9 years old prior to January 1 of the current year and not have reached their eleventh burthday before January 1 of the current year.

  • 11-13 - 4-H'er must be eleven years old prior to January 1 of the current year and not have reached their fourteenth birthday before January 1 of the current year.

  • 14-18 - 4-H'er must be fourteen years of age prior to January 1 of the current year, and not have reached their nineteenth birthday before January 1 of the current year.

Rules/Regulations:

Suggestions/Helpful Hints:

  1. Presentation will be evaluated based on the extent to which the youth meet the presentation objectives. Judges will ask questions and complete the standard score sheet.
  2. The content and format of the presentation must reflect the age and understanding of the youth making the presentation.
  3. Presentations must be factual and research-based information, not personal opinions, value judgments or ethical/moral positions which are more suited for the Public Speaking program. Ask a health care professional to review the information for accuracy. for controversial issues, present research facts to support both sides of the argument.
  4. Since some topics may be sensitive or uncomfortable to some members of the audience, the youth should announce the topic and specific emphasis at the beginning of the presentation. Allow time to leave for indvidiuals who desire to do so.


Awards:

District Winners: $75 Scholarship for NC 4-H Congress for each Division Winner.

State Winner: $25 award for each Division Winner.
