Objective 11: Provide youth experiential educational opportunities in cooperative, nurturing, residential camping environments that stimulate the development of life skills, while focusing on the mental, physical and social growth of the individual.

 

Target Audiences
  • Camp Programs – Any youth ages 6-18. Programs will be tailored and marketed to meet the Mission, Vision, and Goals of the North Carolina 4-H Camps and Centers.
  • Center Programs – Any organization, public or private, especially those with complimentary youth missions. Facilities and programs will be open to all groups (large and small) including, but not limited to 4-H, Cooperative Extension Service, Colleges and Universities, public schools, home schoolers, Family groups, and corporations.

Teaching Points
Camp activities will focus on team building, social development, citizenship awareness, leadership development, communication skills, lifetime sports & recreational activities, and international understanding.

Certain camping experiences will focus on specific developmental areas such as financial literacy, reading, health, conflict resolution, and decision-making. Additionally, “Specialty Camps” will be developed around subject matter to meet the needs of today’s youth.

 

Program Delivery Strategies
  • Camps – Short term (day programs), one-three day mini-camps, day and over-night environmental educational programs, group-initiative activities, traditional (week-long) 4-H camps, and Specialty Camps.
  • Centers – Tailored to meet the specific needs of each user group. Facilities, programs, services, and staff available to provide a wide-range of user group and rental opportunities.

Evaluation Strategies
A. Measures of Progress
· Increase in number of 4-H club members attending summer camp.
· Increase in number of non 4-H members attending summer camp.
· Increased knowledge of the value of camping experiences by youth, parents, and volunteers.
· Number of youth attending specialty camps sustained and started.
B. Impact Indicators
· Number of camping participants demonstrating improved self-confidence
· Number of camping participants demonstrating improved overall behavior
· Number of camping participants demonstrating improved social skills
· Number of camping participants demonstrating improved lifetime sport skills
· Number of camping participants demonstrating improved knowledge of a healthy, safe and sustainable natural environment
