Even though we're in the heat of summer, it isn't too early to begin thinking about the N.C. Mountain State Fair (Sept. 8-17) and the N.C. State Fair (Oct. 13-22). If you're interested in entering one of the many competitions in either fair, now is the time to get your premium book.
The premium books are essential for preparing for these fairs. Competitions take place in hundreds of areas, with categories for nearly all interests. The books offer a bunch of useful information, such as deadlines, guidelines, and changes and additions to categories. From livestock showing to baking contests, fairgoers and competitors can find all the information they need in the premium book.
The 2006 premium books are now available online at www.mountainfair.org and www.ncstatefair.org. The Mountain State Fair premium book is also available at the Western N.C. Agricultural Center in Fletcher and by calling (828) 687-1414.
Premium books for the State Fair will be available at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh beginning in mid-July. North Carolina residents can also call (919) 821-7400 to request a book by mail.
For those of you who are entering competitions, I wish you the best of luck. For those of you who are eager to come to one - or both! - of these fairs, I hope to see you there.
