Food Science Extension

North Carolina State University's Department of Food Science ranks among the top food science departments in the country. This recognition is the result of excellence achieved in all areas of the university's mission: teaching, research, and extension.

Over the years, NCSU's Department of Food Science has made significant contributions to the state and nation's food processing industries. In North Carolina, food processing has grown, diversified, and become a vital economic force by providing jobs and adding value to raw agricultural commodities. A recent survey of North Carolina food processors revealed that all segments of the industry expect to expand. The industry also anticipates an increasing need for technical assistance. As in the past, Food Science Extension faculty will play a significant role in providing this assistance through educational programs and applied research.

In addition to assisting the N.C. food processing industry, Food Science Extension educational programs include food entrepreneur assistance, retail food safety, and training assistance to other agencies. Extension faculty also assist students with internships and job placement.
