- Every child will talk at his/her own pace.
- To talk a child must be able to hear, hear others talk to
them, need to talk.
- By 2 years of age, a child will know 10-50 words.
- A child will say what he/she hears (parents, others who talk,
television, music, reading stories)
- A child will speak about 2200 words by age 5.
Preschooler
- Learns to say simple rhymes.
- Learns by asking questions.
- Learns by talking to self in play and by talking with others.
- Last sounds to develop are l, f ,s, r, sh, st, th, tr and
bl.
Common concerns
- Age for beginning to talk (have a doctor check if
has said no words by age 2)
- Stuttering
- Using bad words (bathroom language)
Children will repeat what they hear and will even try out new
words to check your reaction. The less shock you show the better.
Calmly tell the child you don't allow those words.
Learning values
Values are what you believe in, what you feel is right
and proper. The values you model and teach now set the stage
for life. Children learn by example. Values are learned from
parents, other friends and family members, television, radio
books.
