Katydids (and crickets) make noise by rubbing their wings together. One wing has a file structure and the other has a scraper structure. Each species has a different song.
The songs of katydids are now filling the early night air in my neighborhood. Katydids closely resemble grasshoppers and are sometimes attracted to lights. Katydids species differ in their activity during the season and by time of day. Some species may be reported as a pest, especially in an orchard setting, but usually they are not numerous in the landscape.
