Disease Problems to Watch for in February

Tobacco (Greenhouse): Pythium damping-off

Small Grains
General: Nutritional problems, Weather related stress

Wheat: Powdery mildew

Fruit
Strawberry: Angular leaf spot, Cold injury, Common leaf spot

Vegetables/Herbs
General: Damping-off of seedlings

Cole Crops: Downy mildew, Sclerotinia diseases

Tomato (Greenhouse production): Fusarium root/crown rot, Gray leaf spot (Stemphylium), Sclerotinia stem rot


 
Woody Ornamentals
General decline of shrubs is often noticed at this season as new spring growth begins. Most of these problems can be traced to root rot, nematodes or cultural problems. Winter desiccation and cold injury may also be a factor.

Geranium: Botrytis blight, Pythium root rot, Rhizoctonia root/stem rot, Xanthomonas blight

Geranium, Ivy: Edema

Pansy: Cold injury followed by Black root rot, Botrytis blight

Tulip (Greenhouse): Fusarium blub rot, Penicillium bulb rot, Leaf withering (Trichoderma sp.), Pythium root rot

Snapdragon: Botrytis blight, Downy mildew
