Design Extension Programs were initiated in 1998 in partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension Service, NCSU Office of the Provost, and the School of Design. Faculty in every Design department -- Graphic Design, Landscape Architecture, Architecture and Design--have a long history of community outreach in areas as varied as mainstreet revitalization, environmental planning, viewshed mapping, children's playspaces, cultural restoration, historical preservation, universal design, visualization, multi-media communications, and distance education. However, this formalizes the relationship with Cooperative Extension and facilitates the opportunities to coordinate and serve communities at the local level through the County Offices.

The mission of the School of Design Extension programming is to facilitate the delivery of Design School expertise to the communities. This will be done by developing and coordinating opportunities for community participation in the design educational curriculum; so the students and community can explore the issues and possible solutions together. As well as through the development of content and methods to deliver educational material on community design and planning issues.
