What is a Watershed?

You may often hear us talk about watersheds, so lets define them.

A watershed is all the land that drains to a specific point. It is defined by the ridgelines.

All the rain that falls here will fall roll down one side of this ridgeline or another

All the rain that falls and collects here runs to the point at the bottom of the watershed, where it flows into another watershed.

Large watersheds can be subdivided into smaller watersheds. For example, the Missouri River is a huge watershed made up of many other rivers and watersheds, but the Missouri is also a part of the Mississippi River watershed, and even bigger watershed. Watersheds that consist of entire rivers are called riverbasins.

Many watersheds are just small streams that run through our backyards.
