Assistant Professor and Human Development Specialist - Vita
Dr. Behnke, serves as an assistant professor of human development and as an expert on Latino issues for parents and families. He is working to create a coalition to address the disparities in health-care, nutrition, financial awareness, housing, and academic youth outcomes among Latinos in North Carolina. Dr. Behnke is also developing and evaluating a community-based health and safety program for Latino families in NC. He conducts train-the-trainer workshops on how to work effectively with Latino audiences.
Dr. Behnke has worked to create a series of Spanish-language informational DVDs created to address needs cited by new immigrant Latino families he has interviewed throughout the state. Topics include parenting, housing, health and safety, legal system issues, and education in the US.
Dr. Behnke conducts applied research on marginalized (i.e., poor, rural, [im]migrant) families, academic achievement among Latino youth, parent involvement in academics, stress and parenting, Latino fatherhood, poverty, and family and community partnerships.
Dr. Behnke teaches masters level course about Program Development and Evaluation (FCS 510), Family and Community Partnerships (FCS 512), Family Relationships Across the Life Course (FCS 523), and Contemporary Issues in Family Life Education (FCS 595).
