2008 Small Farms Week-Small Farmer of the Year Award:   Call for Nominations

Do you know an exceptional small farm business man or woman? Why not nominate him/her for the 2008 Gilmer L. and Clara Y. Dudley Small Farmer of the Year Award! Now is your chance to embrace and applaud their accomplishments. The award will be presented during the 22nd Annual Small Farms Week recognition which is March 30 – April 5, 2008.

The Gilmer L. and Clara Y. Dudley Small Farmer-of-the-Year Award recognizes a North Carolina small farmer who is:

  1. A creative innovator in his/her production (livestock and/or crop) and marketing strategies;
  2. A leader, involved in contributing time and other resources to build their communities;
  3. An environmental steward who protects and enhances the earth's resources; and
  4. A savvy and wise business man or woman who runs their farm business in an entrepreneurial and enterprising manner.

This award will be presented on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, during the Small Farmers Appreciation luncheon. The award recipient will receive a plaque, a Small Farmer of the Year jacket and $1,500. The award recipient will also participate in an informal chat and photo session with the Commissioner of Agriculture. You may nominate as many qualified candidates as you wish. If you nominate a small farmer who is recognized for an award, you will also receive special recognition.

The process is simple to do, just follow these steps:

  1. Carefully review the application (DOC) and requirements (PDF).   Nominate small farmer(s) you work with whom you believe are eligible and exceptional candidates for receiving this award.
  2. Encourage your farmers by providing a copy of this application to them.
  3. Submit completed application, postmarked on or before December 14, 2007 to:
