NC Mountain State Fair

Congratulations to the Barnyard Bandits 4-H Club and the Heritage Front Porch Pickers 4-H Club for winning many ribbons showing animals in the fair!  More congratulations to the Barnyard Bandits 4-H club for earning a red ribbon with their Community Booth!  Also, these FRESH volunteers won ribbons:  In the junior class Cooper Mertens won 3rd place and Louise Cummins got 5th place. In the Senior class Andrea Kolarova took 7th place and  Evan Shook took 8th place and Mara Shook took 10th place.

4-H Electric Congress

Mike Williams, Leader of AC DC Electric 4-H Club, Michael Williams attended NC 4-H Electric Congress at UNC Wilmington July 9-11.  This free program for youth ages 11 – 18 is a reward for work in the Electric project.    Two county project winners, 2 cumulative record book participants, 1 electric program recruiter, 1 recruiter at-large (if selected), and 1 cumulative record at-large are allowed to attend congress per county.  This is a great reason to start working on and Electric project record now!  Here is the link for project record forms:

Henderson County team represented NC at National 4-H Forestry Invitational

North Carolina was one of 15 state teams that competed in the 33rd annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational from Sunday, July 22, through Thursday, July 26.  The invitational was held at West Virginia University Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston, West Virginia.  The event was sponsored by Farm Credit System, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, The Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc., Alpha Natural Resources, West Virginia University Extension Service, and the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals.  Events included tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, forest evaluation, the forestry bowl and a forestry written exam.  North Carolina was represented by Tucker Epperson , Logan Hedrick , and Caleb Worrell and Hannah Worrell.  The team was coached by Ranae Worrell.

National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational

Gideon Worrell, Tucker Epperson, Caleb Worrell and Houston Clark represented North Carolina on the Rifle Team at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational in Grand Island, Nebraska, June 17 – 22. They placed 5th in the nation in the CMP event. Overall the NC Rifle Team placed 10th in the nation. Other North Carolina contestants won national awards in Archery and Muzzle Loading. Henderson County coaches were: Andrew Perry, rifle, and Chip Worrell, shotgun.

Congratulationsto the 85 participants in the first West District 4-H Shoot at Polk County Gun Club Saturday, July 28.  Thank you to all of the parent volunteers for working that day and to Coaches Chip Worrell, Andrew Perry and Norman Warren for their leadership in this event.

Congratulations to all of the presenters who gave presentations at 4-H County Activity Day, June 9, District Activity Day, June 19, and the state competitions at the 4-H Horse Show, July1,1 and 4-H Congress, July 17.  State medal winners were:

Special thanks to Kathy Guerard and the parents and 4-H Club leaders who coached our presenters. We hope we’ll have more participants in presentations in 2013!   We plan to have Presentation Training in March.  County Activity Day will be in April.  District Activity Day will be in April or May.  NC 4-H Congress will be June 25 – 29.

Congratulations  to Daniel Torres for being inducted into NC 4-H Honor Club.  Membership in the North Carolina 4-H Honor Club is bestowed upon those 4-H’ers who have exhibited outstanding 4-H citizenship and leadership throughout their 4-H career. An Honor Club member continues to provide leadership and service to the total 4-H program throughout life.  Applicants must have completed three or more years of 4-H club work and shall be at least 16 years of age and not more than 20 years of age on January 1 of the year of application.  The total number of applicants inducted into the NC 4-H Honor Club shall be limited to .5% of the current enrollment of North Carolina 4-H members.  Honor Club Applications will be due January 7, 2013.

Congratulations  to Lee Gover for being elected as the West District 4-H Reporter for 2012- 2013.  As a district officer, Lee will help to plan State Council Conference, which is Nov. 3 – 4, West District 4-H Teen Retreat, and NC 4-H Congress.  District Officers will lead Teen Retreat and the afternoon ceremony at District Activity Day.  As the Reporter, Lee will compile a scrapbook of West District 4-H activities.

Congratulations to Michael Williams for building the retaining wall at the Swannanoa 4-H Center and earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

Logan Hedrick qualified to represent North Carolina in Shotgun in the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational in Grand Island, Nebraska, in July, 2012.  The NC 4-H Shooting Sports Program held a Shootout at the Millstone 4-H Center on September, 22.  Caleb and Gideon Worrell and Tucker Epperson tied with Rifle participants from other counties for the position of state finalists.  There will be another Shootout to determine who will represent NC 4-H on the Rifle Team at the National competition.  Congratulations also go to coaches Chip Worrell, Andrew Perry, Dale Epperson, and Danny Maybin.

 


Drue Stinnett, Paul Maybin, Gideon Worell, and Tucker Epperson represented North Carolina at the National Wildlife Habitat Education Program Inivtationala in Little Rock Arkansas, in July, 2011.  The NC team placed 6th in the nation!  Drue Stinnett was the 13th place individual, and Paul Maybin placed 15th.  Coaches were Ranae Worrell and Marie Stinnett.

Congress winnings:  Briana and Elizabeth were inducted into NC 4-H Honor Club!  This award recognizes 4-H members  for their service, citizenship, and achievement.  Honor Club is a lifetime service organization for 4-H.

 

Kyle F. received a Gold Medal for his Cumulative Record in Community Service.  Briana received a Gold Medal and the James A. Graham Agriculture Trophy for her Cumulative Record in Agriculture.

Five participants from Henderson County joined shooters from across the state to represent North Carolina at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament in Kerrville, Texas, June 28 – July 3:  Paul , Caleb, Gideon, Hannah, and Tucker; along with  coaches Chip Worrell, Andrew Perry and Dale Epperson.  Andrew Perry coached the NC Rifle Team to a Second Place Winning in the Sporter Class at the national tournament.  Paul Maybin was a member of this team.

Henderson Co. Winners in Wildlife Contest 2009

Paul was the first-place junior individual in the 4-H North Carolina Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program Contest Saturday, April 18, at Holmes State Forest.  85 participants from across the state came to the competition, which teaches about the fundamentals of wildlife management.

Hannah was the third place junior individual in the contest.  Junior teams also placed first (Drue, Gideon, Paul, and Tucker) and second (Tessa, Hannah, Matthew and Logan).  Coaches for the winning teams were Ranae Worrell and Marie Stinnett.  Congratulations, Young Naturalists 4-H Club!

Also participating were representatives from the Wildcats (Paige and Emma), Hawks (Morgan), and Run-Abouts (Lee) 4-H Clubs.

Rebekah  won the 2008 West District 4-H Volunteer Award for outstanding leadership and service.

 

Rebekah is dependable.  When she says she will do something, she does it very well.  This year she taught many classes for our county and district. Rebekah is the West District Reporter.  She is also County Council Vice President, and is an invaluable member of this group.  Younger members listen to her wise advice.  Rebekah helped her mother start a new 4-H Club, and is a teen leader.  At church Rebekah is a teacher, Peer Leader, and plays handbells.

Mountain State Fair Winners 2008
Several 4-H Clubs entered beautiful Community Booths.  The Young Naturalists placed first and Mountain View placed second.  Leaders in Training placed first with their landscaping display.   Members of the Barnyard Bandits 4-H Club won many awards with their sheep.  Volunteers with the Carl Sandburg Home (FRESH) showed goats.  Several individuals entered turkeys for the first time this year, and won awards!  Individuals won ribbons in many categories:  chickens, floral arrangements, photography, baked goods and crafts.  Thanks to Briana and Lee for volunteering with many of the animal shows.

Members of the Young Naturalists 4-H Club placed first in the State Shooting Sports Competition held at the Millstone 4-H Center on September 20, 2008.  Junior teams placed first in rifle, archery and shotgun. A second junior rifle team placed second.  Senior teams placed first in rifle and shotgun.  Tucker Epperson was the top individual in junior rifle, shotgun and archery!  Paul Maybin tied him in rifle.  Luke Hall was the top senior in rifle and Caleb Worrell in shotgun.  Top senior individuals will compete for spots on the national teams.  Congratulations Young Naturalists team members and Coaches Chip Worrell and Andrew Perry!

Preston placed first in the Humor Category for Juniors (age 9 – 13) in the NC 4-H Photography Contest.  Michael  was the Third Place winner.  Paige won Honorable Mention, also in the Humor Category.

Shooting Sports Teams
Andrew Perry and Chip Worrell coached the Henderson County teams, helping them to win gold at the NC 4-H Shooting Competition in September, 2007.  These teams were joined by 4-H’ers from Hoke, Richmond and Macon Counties to form the North Carolina Shooting Sports Team, which placed ninth in the national tournament.  This is the first time North Carolina has entered a team in the national competition in many years.  Members from Henderson County on the rifle team were: Hannah and Matthew.  Also, from Henderson County, the shotgun team members were:  David, Caleb, Kyle and Patrick.

Blaine (from Hoke County) and Tyler (from Richmond County) also shot rifle.  Martha, from Macon County, shot air rifle, and placed third in the nation as an individual!

WHEP 2007
Congratulations to the Young Naturalists 4-H Club for winning first place in the NC 4-H Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program Contest at Carolina Beach on April 19!  Henderson County had first place winning senior (age 14 – 18) and junior (age 9 – 13) teams, as well as the second place junior team.  High scoring individuals in the senior category were:  Patrick, Caleb, Bethany and Kyle.  High scoring juniors included Gideon and Hannah.  The senior team will participate in the National Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program Contest in Stillwater, Oklahoma in July.

 

The Hawks 4-H Club raised $179 for Big Brother Big Sisters!  Look for the decorated bowling pin they won in the Cooperative Extension Office.

Members of the Young Naturalists 4-H Club were winners once again, this time at the NC 4-H Forestry Invitational at Schenck Forest in Raleigh on September 29, 2007.  The test includes identification of trees, insects, diseases, and tree measurement.  Top individuals were Caleb, Gideon and Sarah.  The top junior team was Tucker, Gideon and Caleb.  The junior girls had the second-place team:  Drue, Hannah, Sarah and Tessa.  Kyle was the third place individual in the senior category.  Congratulations, Forestry Team, and Coach Ranae Worrell!

The North Carolina 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament was Saturday, September 15 at the Millstone 4-H Education Center.  Teams came from across the state for competition.  Thanks to coaching from Joe Taylor, Andrew Perry and Chip Worrell, Henderson County brought home many awards:

2007 NC 4-H Horse Show Winnings

The Mustangs 4-H Club is proud to announce that Alison won several ribbons, including first place in Dressage Combined Training (combined ages and horse/ pony).  Callie placed fifth at the NC 4-H Horse Show with her poster and sixth with her painting.  Congratulations, girls!

 

County Activity Day 2007

Horse Show Winners 2007

Callie, Tayler and Allison represented Henderson County 4-H at the West District 4-H and Open Youth Horse Show May 6 at the WNC Agriculture Center in Fletcher.  Callie placed second in Hunter Pony Showmanship, third in Pony Hunter Under Saddle, and third in Junior Texas Barrels.  Tayler placed second in Hunter Pony Equitation.  Congratulations, girls!

We’re proud of the Henderson County 4-H WHEP teams!

74 4-Hers converged at Howell Woods in Johnston County for the 2007 State WHEP Contest on Saturday, April 28.  This represents the largest group to participate in the North Carolina state contest.

Eleven counties put forth five Senior Division teams and a record 14 Junior Division teams.Teams and individuals competed in events including wildlife identification, wildlife foods, aerial photos, and on-site wildlife management practices.

The Senior (age 14 – 18) Henderson County team placed third in the state competition.  Members were Bethany, Patrick and Kyle.
The Junior (age 9 – 13) Henderson County team won first place in state competion!  Members were:  Caleb, Gideon, Hannah, and Drue.  Individual placings were: Second place – Caleb, and third place – Gideon.
Coaches were:  Deanna McCraw, Ranae Worrell, Cindy Hyde and Marie Stinnett.

 

2007 4-H Fashion Revue

The 4-H Fashion Revue and Talent Show were Tuesday, May 1, at Opportunity House. Members of the Beginning Sewing Class modeled their shorts. Many beautiful entries included a pullover black top and pants by Daniel, a sundress by Hannah, Rebekah and Mary Grace in a matching dress and skirt, and Briana in an orange sundress with a fully lined white with orange polka dot shrug. My Quilt Shoppe sponsored the 4-H Fashion Revue this year. Volunteer judges were Lois Bayne, Dale Link and Mikki Reinicker.  Junior winners (age 9 – 13) were:   First and Second Place:  Mallory, with a brown A-line skirt with a nave top with horse print, and a sleeveless blue gingham dress with sunflowers. Third Place:  AnneRachel with capri pants.  The Senior winner (age 14 – 18) was Rebekah, with a ruffled purple and white print cotton sundress  Congratulations to all participants in the 2007 Fashion Revue!

2007 4-H Entertains 

The 2007 4-H Talent Show was Tuesday, May 2, at Opportunity House.
Volunteer judges were Karen Bayne Pfotzer and Sue Ruff. Tempo Music sponsored the talent show.   After the county level, “4-H Entertains” is no longer a competition.  County judges chose the first place junior and senior acts to go on to perform at  District Activity Day.   Two acts will be chosen from all of the Western Counties to perform in the afternoon awards ceremony.  Judges in Raleigh will choose performers from all of the District Activity Days to perform at 4-H Congress in Raleigh.  These performers will receive a full scholarship to 4-H Congress, and training by Nova Thomas, a 4-H alumna, while at Congress.
