2008 Chief Hicks Garden Kit Giveaway To promote home gardening, Chief Michell Hicks is once again offering garden starter kits this spring. The kits contain nearly all heirloom and Cherokee varieties this year. Seeds from the old timey varieties can be saved and replanted year after year. Buckets contain seeds from Roy Lambert’s Cherokee October Beans, the Trail of Tears bean, Woods Prolific Bush Scallop squash, Romano bush-type green beans, Danvers carrots, Straight Eights cucumbers, Florida Broadleaf mustard greens, bunching onion seed, Skyscraper sunflowers and Sweet Morning Star yellow sweet corn (The sweet corn is a hybrid, so don’t harvest its seeds for saving). Cherokee Choices is including a recipe packet. Kituwah Language Preservation is providing Cherokee language translations of common gardening terms. The Chief will also celebrate Arbor Day and Earth Day by giving out one blueberry bush, one white flowering dogwood seedling and a hazelnut seedling along with the garden kits. Kits are available on April 15th at 5pm in Snowbird at the Cornsilk Center, on April 16th at 5pm at the Cherokee County Community Center, on April 17th at 10 am at Tsali Manor (for Elders only) and again on April 17th at 5pm at the Yellow Hill covered gym. The numbers of kits are limited. When they are gone, they are gone! The Cherokee Reservation Center provides easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information. We can answer your questions on a wide array of topics.
