Edsel Daniel


Born in Bladen County, Edsel graduated from East Arcadia High School in Riegelwood. He received his B.S. Degree in Agriculture with post graduate studies in Guidance & Counseling from Tuskegee University. He received his M.S. Degree in Agricultural Education from North Carolina A&T State University. He was a Vocational Agriculture Teacher with the Chatham County Schools from 1965 to 1983, and has been with the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation as a Special Field Representative since then.

Edsel is a member of Mitchell Chapel Church. He serves on the NC Food and Agricultural Council, the NC Outreach Council of the NC Farm Service Agency, Special Populations Committee of Chatham County Schools, and is Chairman of the Cooperative Extension Strategic Council of NC A&T State University. His hobbies are photography, music, and wood work

John Gerken


John Gerken moved to Chatham County in November, 1997, after retirement as Professor and Extension Specialist in Animal Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University at Blacksburg, Virginia. He has a Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from NC State University as well as BS and MS degrees from Virginia Tech. He had more than 14 years experience as a county extension agent in Clarke County, Virginia prior to holding state-level posts for more than 20 years. His extension experience includes active involvement with 4-H livestock activities at local, state, and national levels and extensive work in beef cattle production, management, and nutrition.

In addition, he coordinated a comprehensive university-wide outreach project for 18 years. The Powell River Project focused on reclamation of surface mined land and economic development in seven coal mining counties in Virginia. Funding was provided from public and private sources for faculty efforts across the university.

In retirement, John and his wife, Shirley, are enjoying their new home on a small farm in the Silk Hope area of the county where he raises Gelbvieh and Angus cattle.

Tommy Glosson


Tommy is very active in community activities. He is a board member of the Chatham County Farm Bureau and board member and treasurer of the Chatham County AgriBusiness Council. He is a former member and chairman of the Chatham County Planning Board and former member and chairman of the Chatham County ABC Board. Tommy has been a member of the Chatham County Extension Advisory Council for seven years. In 1997 and 1998, he was the lead cook responsible for preparing lunch for the Farm and Industry Tour. In 1998, he helped Chatham County Agricultural Fair by coordinating an antique tractor and farm machinery display and also arranged for antique tractors and farm machinery to be displayed at our Heritage Day Celebration and Farm Fun Day held last year.

Tommy is a retired poultry grower and now raises beef cattle and owns and manages timber lands on an 150-acre farm. In his "spare time" Tommy enjoys restoring and showing antique tractors and antique tractor pulls.

Shirille Lee

Shirille Lee is a fifth generation native of Chatham County. She was employed by Southern States in Pittsboro, then Siler City for a total of 10-1/2 years. She is currently employed by Chatham County Together!, a mentoring program that works with Chatham County youth, ages 6-17, that are at risk of court involvement or school failure.

Shirille is a foster parent for Chatham County Department of Social Services, on the advisory board for the Chatham County Coalition for Adolescent Health, Systems of Care Grant board (a federal grant given to Orange, Person Chatham Counties' Mental Health Departments to build community collaborative), and a youth leader at her church in Siler City.

Jim LeTendre, Chairman


A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jim has lived in North Carolina since 1969. He moved to Apex in 1971 after finishing his enlistment in the Marine Corps. He has been a resident of Chatham County since 1976.

Jim is a partner in Sunny Slope Greenhouses and has produced greenhouse tomatoes and vegetables for over 20 years. Jim is a member of the North Carolina Greenhouse Vegetable Growers' Association and has served as an officer and on the board of directors several times. Jim is an advocate of sustainable and alternative agriculture systems and spends his free time promoting family farms. He has been involved in the establishment of several local farmers' markets and has served on their boards. Jim was involved with the inception and development of the Sustainable Farming Program at Central Carolina Community College, has served on their board of directors, and also teaches classes for the program. Jim has been a collaborator with NCSU on several grant projects to educate extension agents and farmers on organic, sustainable, and greenhouse techniques.

Jim has served as a volunteer to the Cooperative Extension Service for almost 15 years, the last 8 of which have been on the Extension Advisory Council. He has served as chairman for the last several years.

John Wait


John worked in manufacturing for Ford Motor Company and Burroughts Compter in Michigan. A Leigh University graduate, 1949, he found gardening in North Carolina so different that he took a Master Gardening course along with other Chatham County residents. Through the Master Gardener program, he became interested in the Extension Service.

John has been a resident of Chatham County since 1983.

Dr. Barbara A. Walton


Dr. Barbara Walton owns and operates 3rd Street Veterinary Clinic in Siler City. Dr. Walton, originally from Ohio, received her Veterinary Technician degree in Columbus. She then worked as a licensed veterinary technician at OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital doing microbiology and emergency work while continuing preveterinary course requirements. She moved to North Carolina in 1984 to work at NCSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital as an intensive care technician for small animals. She graduated from NCSU-CVM with a DVM degree in 1991.

Dr. Walton has practiced in a mixed animal practice and small animal emergency work. She enjoys small animals as well as large animals and has been know to do exotics and wildlife. Dr. Walton is currently concentrating on companion animals and small ruminants.

Brenda Williams


Brenda Williams moved to Chatham County from Alabama in 1990 where she lived on a farm and worked with the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service (ASCS). She and her family presently live in Siler City. Brenda is District Coordinator with the Chatham County Soil and Water Conservation District and has served in that capacity since 1990.

Brenda is actively involved with Farm Fun Day each year in the fall. She serves as Chairperson of the Area 3 SWCD Education Committee, is a member of the Soil Conservation Society, District Employee Association, and has served on strategic planning subcommittees.

She was recognized in 1999 for NC Earth Team Employee of the year for recruiting volunteers to help with clean up after Hurricane Fran.

Brenda and her husband, Billy Williams, have been married for over 25 years and have three sons, Wade, Tory & Todd. She loves to read in her spare time.
