- You have described lecanium scale insects. Because this
large scale is
sometimes controlled by natural predators and parasites, it would
be better to avoid
spraying unless the problem is severe. Large populations can be
suppressed with
sprays of orthene, malathion, or horticultural oil after the eggs
have hatched and
crawlers are present, usually
by mid-June.
