Master Gardener Decision Support Guide
Trees
Bradford Pear
Flowers
This damage is done by an insect called a flower thrips. Control
of flower thrips is
difficult because of constant migration among weeds, grasses,
flowers and trees.
They
seldom remain a pest, however, after the flowers fall. Short
term control may be
achieved with applications of malathion or Pyrenone applied at close
intervals. Application of insecticides during the flowering period is
generally discouraged due to potential harm to pollinating insects
such as honeybees.
Recurrence of the problem in future years may depend on weather
as well as
agricultural/horticultural activities nearby.
