Between 175 and 200 people celebrated the 85th anniveresary of Extension at the Chatham County Fairgrounds, Pittsboro.
Pinto beans, hot dogs, birthday cake, lemonade and tea were served. The Chatham County Manager, two assistant county managers, two county commissioners, and numerous other county employees attended. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the Extension Timeline; program-area displays; old Extension photographs and articles, memorabilia and antique farm equipment; and active demonstrations of rope making, weaving, chair caning, and soap making.
At 6:15 p.m., the Extension Staff recognized retirees and alumni of Extension, 4-H, and Homemaking. The Chatham County Advisory Council attended the event and took a very active part in the preparations. The event was a huge success and we received many positive comments from those attending.
On Thursday, November 4, 1999, you will be given the opportunity to once again vote on the "Nickels for Know-How" referendum. Nickels for Know-How is a program by which users of seed and fertilizer access themselves 2 nickels (3 nickels beginning January 1, 2000) to go to support agricultural research, extension, and teaching at North Carolina State University.
This unique self-help program was started in 1951 and has helped to fund virtually every significant breakthrough in agriculture in this state since it began. The "Nickels" referendum was last voted on in 1993 and passed with a 90% vote in favor of the referendum. A two-thirds majority is needed in the vote on November 4th to continue the program for another six years.
For additional information about the "Nickels for Know-How" program, history, and proposed funding for projects, visit our web site at http://chatham.ces.state.nc.us and click on the "Nickels for Know-How" link.
Polling places will be conveniently and strategically placed around Chatham County for voting ease by eligible voters in the county. The "Nickels for Know-How" referendum chairman for the 1999 vote is Herbert Gaines. Be looking for additional information to follow about this important referendum.
