Part I --- How to Sell Your Timber --- 7:00 p.m.
Presenter: Dr. Robert Bardon -- Extension Forestry
Specialist -- North Carolina State University
When and how a landowner sells timber can greatly influence how much money they can make, their overall financial plans, cost of regeneration and other management objectives. A landowner would never sell bonds before they mature or sell stocks when the market is down. Years of growth and value are accumulated in a mature timber stand. The accumulated annual income from all those years is frequently marketed in a single sale. Too much is at stake to sell timber without an understanding of the markets and of the quality and quantity of timber. Size, quality, and species of timber are highly variable. Specialized knowledge is required to identify tree species and to estimate volume and value within utilization standards accepted by local markets. There are no daily market price reports for standing timber (stumpage), nor are there any government support prices. Both demand and price for many timber products fluctuate widely. Add to this the fact that many timber sales are once- or twice-in-a-lifetime occurrences. Learning from experience can be very expensive! This program will address marketing and selling timber, timber sale agreements and seeking professional advice from a consulting forester. By participating in the program landowners can make their next (or first) timber sale both a pleasant and a profitable experience.
Part II --- Managing Pine Stands to Reduce Losses by Southern Pine Beetles and the State’s Southern Pine Beetle Cost-Share Program --- 8:00 p.m.
Presenter: Dr Dennis Hazel, Extension Forestry Specialist, North Carolina State University
Southern pine beetles (SPB) remain the most costly problem for private forest landowners in North Carolina on an annual basis. These pests impact pines throughout the state. However, by maintaining vigorous healthy stands of pine, losses can be greatly minimized. With assistance from the President’s Healthy Forests Initiative, the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources added 13 regional foresters whose focus is assisting private landowners manage their forests to minimize risk and to assist them when SPBs occur. Dr. Hazel will review SBP biology and stand-manage activities that can reduce risks, SPB status in the region, SPB outlook for the region, and the NC Division of Forest Resources SPB cost-share program.

Ah, wilderness! We finally moved out to our little place in the woods. Cleared just enough room to build a house and planted a little garden. Boom! We are now playing Elmer Fudd in the world of Bugs Bunny. Dwatted Wabbit! Everything we plant is like candy for Bugs, Bambi, and a host of other critters we never even heard of.
We don’t guarantee that growing lettuce and carrots in Bugs’s backyard will be easy. But Dr. DePerno will offer some suggestions that will help you to understand the challenges and perhaps leave a little less “beFuddled.”

Women often end up being the sole owners of and
principle decision makers on private forest land. In many cases, they have outlived spouses who
previously made management decisions.
Even where women share ownership, they increasingly share responsibility
for physical and fiscal management of their forests.
A variety of topics will be covered including forest
terminology, understanding available resources, and selling timber. The central theme is helping women know what
professional and other resources are available to help them and how to obtain
those resources.
