Jordan Lake 4-H Adventure Day Camp

There are still spaces available

Jordan Lake 4-H Adventure Day Camps will be held June 12 - 16; June 19 - 23; and June 26 - 30, 2000. These are three individual weeks of camp that you may sign up for one week or more. The fee will be $75.00 per camper, per week. There is a limit of 60 campers per week and applications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

South Central 4-H District Teen Retreat

We had a total of twelve teens and three adults attend the South Central District 4-H Teen Retreat held at Southern Pines on March 17-19: Jonathan Blue, Stefanie Jeremiah, Jessica Townsend, Ashley Reed, Charles Rogers, Melanie Cross, Taye Mulder, Chris Beyer, Jeremy Palmer, Jonathan Austin, Timothy Austin, and Jon Sumrell. Adult leaders attending were: Fern Jeremiah, Susan Mulder and Julia Austin.The group enjoyed a variety of activities including: disco, bowling, putt-putt, go-carts and a dance. Workshops covered topics on teambuilding, electricity, woodworking and horticulture.

4-H Presentations and Talent Contest

Mark your calendars! The 4-H Presentations and Talent Contest will be held Thursday, May 18, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chatham County agriculture building auditorium. All 4- H'ers are invited to show your talents and 4-H project presentations. Entry forms are due by May 15.

4-H Public Speaking and Fashion Revue

This event was held on April 6. Winners were:

Dairy Poster Contest
The theme for the 2000 Dairy Poster Contest is "Get Moo-ving with Milk". Youth should incorporate this theme into their posters. Please note the following rules:
1. Competition in this contest will be conducted on an individual basis in the following age divisions: 9-12, 13-15, and 16-19 at the county and state level only.
2. Posters should be a standard 22" x 28" size.
3. Posters MUST NOT contain copyright material such as cartoon characters, etc.
4. Posters must have been displayed at least once in a public place.
5. Youth who place first, second or third in a particular division in the State Dairy Poster
Contest are not eligible to compete in that particular division again.
6. An entry from should be completed and taped on the back of each poster. The entry form
will consist of: Name, Age - date of birth, Address, telephone number, and title of poster.

Posters should be turned in to Vernon McHam, 4-H Agent by June 16.

Food Science Symposium

Scholarship monies are available to sponsor 15 participants in the 2000 Food Science, Poultry Science, Food Safety and Food Quality Symposium. The Symposium is for youth, ages 15 to 17. The Symposium will be held on the NCSU campus, June 25 to 29 and students will be housed in University Towers. All costs for meals and housing are covered by grants. This is an excellent opportunity and with the scholarship, it is basically free!

Jim Graham Scholarship

The North Carolina Simmental Association is proud to offer a scholarship to a student planning or pursuing a career in an agricultural-related field of study. Eligibility requirements will be based on financial need, scholastic record, leadership and character. Application forms with a photo, SAT score and high school or college transcript are due to the scholarship committee by July 15. Applications are available at the Extension office.

NC 4-H Congress

Teens!! For a great time this summer, come to 4-H Congress! Dance at Dorton Arena, experience a teen night club, presentations, workshops, state elections. community service, midnight pizza and more will make this week unforgettable!
The dates are July 17 - 21. Cost is $155 and covers meals, lodging, transportation and insurance. To register, send your $55 deposit by June 23 to the 4-H office. The balance of $100 and code of conduct/medical release forms are due by July 3.

NC 4-H Photo Contest

4-H members ages 9 - 19 may submit entries. Participation is NOT limited to 4-H'ers enrolled in 4-H Photography projects. All photos must have been taken by the 4-H'er whose name appears on the entry. Entries may be made from negatives or slides. Negatives must be provided with a print showing preferred cropping. Do NOT cut negative strips into single negative and do NOT use paper clips on negatives. It is not required that prints be provided when slides are submitted, but it would be helpful to have them.
Some prints may be retained for use in the state exhibit. Each entry must be accompanied by an entry form. Entries are due to the 4-H office by June 16. These forms are available from the 4-H office. Please print the 4-H'ers name, and county on the back of each print or on the slide mount. 4-H'ers may submit one individual photo in each class. Categories are:
1. Color
2. This is 4-H (Color or B & W)
3. Agricultural Scenes (Color or B & W)

CLUB CORNER

Rocky River Riders 4-H Club
Margo, Rachel, Roby, Holton, Claire and Vanessa went to the South Central District 4- H Horse Show and did very well !! They placed in all the classes they rode. Margo did particularly well cantering for the first time with Muddy Buddy in the show ring. She received two third places and one second !! Claire, Rachel and Vanessa placed in each class. Holton rode in 4 classes and got first place in each class of her senior division. Roby rode in 4 Western classes and won every class with Shorty in his Little Britches Division. But a surprise came for him on Sunday morning when the leader of the Chatham Equestrian 4H Club came with his family to give Roby his Trophy. He had won the High Point Award in his Division !
All our 6 riders qualified for the State Show on July 6th, 7th and 8th. It will be held at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh.
BIG THANKS to KIM for working SO HARD with the kids on their art project. JULY 7th, your art projects will be exhibited and judged at the State Fairgrounds. We have 18 Art Projects as Follow :
