Master Gardeners Provide Consultation at Farmers Market

With the opening of the Pittsboro Farmers Market on Thursday, April 5, Chatham County's Master Gardener Volunteers renewed their consultation service for Chatham County gardeners. Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) will be on duty providing consultations for home gardeners with gardening questions at the Pittsboro Market on Thursday afternoons.

The Pittsboro Farmers Market is at the Chatham County Fairgrounds, one block off highway 64. Turn south at the stoplight near the Food Lion Shopping Center. MGVs will be at the Market during its Thursday afternoon hours from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. - or until the produce runs out.

Plants don't look right? Diseases? Insects? How do you work with clay? Do you need lime? These questions and more can be brought to the MGV table at the Pittsboro Farmers Market.

Master Gardener Volunteers are trained by agents of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service to assist with program delivery to home gardeners. This outreach program at the Pittsboro Farmers Market is a part of that effort. These volunteers have participated in extensive training through the Extension Service and are fulfilling a part of their commitment to return at least 40 hours of service to the community.

Persons interested in being a part of this corps of volunteers should send name, address, phone number, and email address to Master Gardener Volunteers, PO Box 279, Pittsboro, NC 27312. You will be notified when the next recruitment and training is scheduled, sometime early in 2002.

Meanwhile, if you have gardening problems, bring samples to the Farmers Market. Or just stop by to talk gardening.
