NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT PLANS NEED TO BE UPDATED

Dr. Glenn Carpenter
NCSU Cooperative Extension

During the last couple of years all poultry farmers have undergone extensive training on nutrient management planning. Such things as soil and litter sampling, best management practices for manure handling, and doing the paperwork for nutrient management planning have been learned.

Nutrient management plans need to be kept up to date. Many farmers have let this slide over the past year. Intentions are always that "I don't have time to do the paperwork, now, but I will do it later." Somehow the paper work never gets done. There are many farmers, in this area, that stand a real danger of being inspected by the state, and not having their plans in place, and receiving a hefty fine. Remember that the fine for not having a complete, up to date, nutrient management plan can be up to ten thousand dollars per occurrence.

If you have forgotten how to fill out the paperwork, give me a call at (919) 542-8202. Most of the poultry companies are scheduling nutrient management plan updates for growers throughout the fall and winter, so poultry farmers should check with your flock supervisor.

For more information, contact your county office of the Cooperative Extension Service. All Cooperative Extension programs are open to all people regardless of race, religion, color, ethnic origin, age, sex or disability.
