Some of you will be wondering why alcooke is sending messages about pastures. But from the calls I get, I'm aware that some folks do not know our incredible livestock and forage agent Sam Groce. I always transfer these calls to Sam. At any rate, if you have pastures, you probably have weeds and Sam is the best source I know for how to manage the pasture as well as the weeds. Please note the following class that he is offering:

The Chatham County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service will be conducting a course for pasture owners entitled Strategies for Weed Control in Piedmont Pastures. This program will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Chatham County Agriculture Building. This program will be a repeat of the similarly titled program that was held April 14, 2005 at Dry Dock Seafood Restaurant in Siler City, NC. For those pesticide applicators needing recertification credits, this course has been approved for two hours credit in the subclasses N, O, D and X.

This program will focus on the identification and control of weeds that are commonly found in pastures in Chatham County. The weeds that will be discussed are found in pastures that contain almost any livestock species including but not limited to: beef and dairy cattle, horses, sheep and goats. Control strategies that will be discussed will include not only herbicides that are effective in control, but also other strategies such as cultural controls like proper liming and fertilization, mechanical control and biological control such as multi-species grazing.

This is a free program, open to anyone with an interest in producing a high quality pasture. However, pre-registration for this program is required by Friday, September 23, 2005 so that there will be adequate materials prepared for the program. You may pre-register by either calling the Chatham County Center at 919.542.8202 or by e-mailing Jane_Tripp@ncsu.edu.
